In accordance with the decision of the executive committee of Turkish Higher Education Council issued on 15.06.2016, the department of secondary school social science education was unified with the department of Turkish Teaching, and therefore its name was changed to the ‘’Department of Social Science Education and Turkish Language Teaching.’’ The number of branches increased 5 after the joining of the department of ‘’social sciences teaching’’.

In its meeting on 11.07.2007, the Turkish Higher Education Council had re-evaluated the undergraduate programs for training secondary schools teachers in the faculty of education and decided to cancel the existing system in which the undergraduate program was combined with non-thesis graduate course (3,5+1,5 years). Instead, they introduced a new undergraduate program in which the pedagogical formation would be given to the secondary schools teachers throughout 5 years  

Accordingly, our department started the programs of Geography and History Teaching in the academic year of 2008-2009 and admitted students till 2013. In the academic year of 2014-1015, the Turkish Higher Education Council reorganized the duration of the undergraduate programs for training secondary schools teachers as 4 years. Our department started again to admit undergraduate students from 2015 onwards.

Department of Turkish Language Teaching was established in 1995 and admitted students from this year on. In the academic year of 1996-1997, it started to admit also students to the evening education. However, since the programs of evening education were cancelled in Turkey in the academic year of 2011-2012, the department of Turkish Teaching ceased to admit students to the evening education. Department of Turkish Teaching has maintained its teaching and education activities without interruption up to this time.

Department of Social Studies Education admits undergraduate students from the academic year of 1998-1999 onwards, though its teaching and education activities were discontinued in the period between 2008 and 2011.

Our department offers the ‘’certificate program of pedagogical formation’’ to the graduates from the departments of Geography, History and Turkish Language and Literature in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences who want to become teacher. The duration of the ‘’certificate program of pedagogical formation’’ was two terms (1 year).
