GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION

The period of study in our department was rearranged in 1998 as 3,5+1,5 years in accordance with the reorganization of Education Faculties in Turkey. In its meeting on 11.07.2007, the Turkish Higher Education Council had re-evaluated the undergraduate programs for training secondary schools teachers in the faculty of education and decided to cancel the existing system in which the undergraduate program was combined with non-thesis graduate course (3,5+1,5 years). Instead, they introduced a new undergraduate program in which the pedagogical formation would be given to the secondary schools teachers throughout 5 years .

Our department started to admit undergraduate students again since the academic year of 2008-2009 onwards. However, Turkish Higher Education Council did not provide our department with student quota for the years of 2013 and 2014, but our department started to admit undergraduate students again since 2015. Our department offers undergraduate and master programs.

During the undergraduate period, our students take the courses of ‘school experience’ and ‘teaching practice’ which enable them to acquire professional experience and make them love their jobs. In addition, they take the basic and elective courses which provide them with knowledge that is necessary for their field and profession. Our graduates can teach in public and private secondary schools.

Our academic staff and students can teach and study at foreign universities that have agreement with our university in accordance with the Erasmus Programme. Our department organizes scientific activities at national and international level. At the moment, the academic staff of our department consists of 3 professor, 1 associate professor, 1 assistant proffesor and 2 research assistants.

In terms of student success in public personnel selection exam, our department is among the most successful ones at our university. Besides, another distinctive feature of our department is that it attracts students who rank among the first 5,000 in student election exam and it offers education based on land surveys.

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT A NATION, WHO KNOWS VERY WELL GEOGRAPHY AND ITS GEOGRAPHY, ALSO KNOWS HOW TO PROTECT AND BENEFIT FROM IT.
