The Department of Geography Education, (Turkish and Social Sciences Education Department) Lecturers and Students visit to Lesvos Island (Greece)
The Department of Geography Education, with the participation of Social Science Eduacation Department member Prof. Dr. Muhammet ERAT, Geography Teaching and Social Studies Teaching students were travelled, subject by “history and nature” field study was carried out on Greece Lesbos Island on 02-03 December 2023, under organised by Prof. Dr. Rüştü ILGAR.
The Yeni Cami in the city centre of Mytilene is in a sad and crumbling state, waiting to be restored to tourism (A marvellous monument that is rare even in Turkey).
Bazaar Hammam It is an Ottoman bath, which was part of the Yeni Cami in the complex, the city centre of Mytilene and underwent restoration in 2000-2001. It is open for touristic use.
2. Kalloni (Kalonya) Bay: Bird (flamingo) observations were made for a short period of time in the salt lakes in Kalloni Bay.
3. Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos: We visited The Natural History Museum and the Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos. This museum is one of the first members of The Global Geopark Network (GGN) with the 2004 Madonie Declaration signed by Nikolas Zouros, founding member of the UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGP), European Geoparks Network (EGN) and Wolfgang Eder on behalf of UNESCO. 4. Molivos Castle: Which was one of the most strategic military points for The Ottoman Empire, built for the first time in 1373 by Genoese Francisco Gatelouzon and restored to its present appearance during the Ottoman period. Also the fountain, the mosque with its minaret cut down were visited.
5. Petra: The village of Petra is a settlement in The North-West of Lesvos Island, home to the church of Panagia Glykofiloussa on the cliffs and The Turkish Mansion. A short visit was made on the beach of this village.
6. Mantamados: A short visit to Mantamados Taksiark Church of the Holy Cross by Turkish coffee break. A religious sitiation with its ceramics and the icon in the Monastery, believed to be the world's only icon made of human blood ...
