Students of the Department of Geography Education Carried Out A Field Work in the Gelibolu Peninsula
Students of the Department of Geography Education carried out a field study in the Gallipoli Peninsula. As part of the Physical Geography II course, a group of 17 students, including 2nd year students and graduate students, participated in the event held on 27 December 2023 under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Evren Erginal. Within the scope of the study, the working group first visited the Atatürk House and Museum in Bigalı Village and then examined the honeycomb-shaped dissolution and tafoni formations formed as a result of salt weathering in the Eocene sandstones in Büyükkemikli Cape. The study, which focused on coastal geomorphology, continued with observations on the Gelibolu marine terrace, on which the city of Gallipoli is located. Explanations were made to the students about the sedimentological characteristics of the Bakunian aged terrace sequence formed by the Caspian Sea fauna dating back approximately 900 thousand years ago and its relationship with the tectonic activity in the region.
